Emerging urban realities – learning from African cities

Gilbert Siame will speak about co-producing urban spaces. He will discuss the concept of co-production and how it has been used to inform the gradual but sustained positive narrative and change in the way urban informality is considered in urban policies and practice in several African cities. The lecture draws on case study evidence and insights from Kanyama informal settlement greening project in Lusaka city, Zambia and service delivery projects and policies in Kampala city, Uganda.
Florence Chibuye Kunda-Wamuwi will talk about gendered impacts of climate Change on livelihoods of forest-dependent communities in a fast-growing town of Kalomo, Zambia. The lecture will demonstrate a strong relationship between rural and urban livelihoods (food, energy, water and infrastructure) and how the rural-urban livelihood linkages are threatened by climate change. Using climate data and socio-economic surveys, the lecture highlights disproportionate impacts of climate change on livelihood systems upon which women most depend. The findings underscore the importance of thinking beyond the rural-urban binary in tackling climate change vulnerabilities and resilience building.
